This is a HUGE, heavy (175 grams), manly digital dressy/sports watch from Rip Curl. It's not part of the line that has tide functions for surfing; it's part of the casual line. It does however have an incredible array of useful function which include :

A second time zone.
A 99 lap chrono in 1/100th sec. increments.
A 4-mode timer (incredibly complete) with interactive alarm tones.
4 alarms, nice and loud.

I've seen this model in plain stainless steel and thought it was a KO, but since the Houston is now discontinued all that's left is this titanium carbide-coated model called Midnight for a reason :it's so black it absorbs light like a black hole; so much so you can only appreciate it in full detail during daytime. It's not as flashy as the stainless model and onlookers might mistake it for a plastic watch (LOL !) but is a head-turner anyway and will steal many a glance. Titanium carbide is an ultra-hard, aerospace-grade electrolitic coating with ceramic properties than doesn't fade with time or friction so this puppy will keep it's blackness for life. The hardened mineral glass is actually curved and very thick, which I find a plus and a nice aesthetic feature. Numerals are not particularly big but nice and visible with excellent contrast and made of little bar-matrix as oppossed to dot matrix or conventional segments.

It has a wide, sturdy wristband with a spring-loaded fold-over clasp AND a safety clasp as well, which is so tight it won't come off unless you're hit by a train . I find it incredibly comfy but then again I buy my watches as big and heavy as possible despite my skinny wrists so be warned....

Just one flaw that made me knock the 5th star off: it looses 24 seconds a month while my other Rip Curl(Oceantech Digital Deluxe) is accurate to 1-2 secs a month. I guess I'll have that fixed when the battery runs out and I'll take it to the shop. This is not unheard of on much more expensive watches so I'm not worried.

Get one while they last.


I purchased this watch as a suitable replacement for a business attire analog watch. Oddly, the majority of digital watches were initially marketed to the sports crowd, and no one else. Thankfully this has changed, with Fossil, Kenneth Cole, etc and now Rip Curl. The Rip Curl has a very sturdy band, contemporary look, and very nice LCD readout. I plan on using the watch on a major exam, and was disappointed that the timer (which can be programmed to count up, down, or repeat up to 24hrs) will always play a chime of some sort. Four alarms is great to have. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase.
